All parties must be completely informed through counselling before performing any genetic tests.

Counselling should be regarded as an integral part of the genetic testing process and must include information about how the test is done, the type of results that can be obtained, the legal consequences (especially for minors) and how the data and the remaining samples are stored. As a consequence, each individual entitled can has to give an informed written consent.

The last stage of counselling is the personal delivery of the results. This is preferable to postal delivery of the written report, which is not able to provide any adequate explanations.

All testing should be preceded
by adequate information about the purpose
and possible outcomes of the test”
