The certain identification of the subjects tested is an essential prerequisite for ensuring that the test is actually carried out on the subjects whose DNA is to be analysed: the lack of certainty as to the origin of a sample makes the test null and void.
This is why identification and consent protocols are extremely detailed.
Valid identity documents are usually sufficient to identify a subject, but it is a good procedure for the tested parties to verify each other's identities simply by meeting and seeing each other.
In cases where the parties in no way wish to meet or even see each other, a photograph and fingerprinting will be required, or the presence of one or more witnesses confirming the identity of the proband in writing.
